The Temple – and Other Temples

There have been many questions on where the Temple of Chrysalis (from hereon "the Temple") positions itself on the landscape of neo-religious movements in comparison to other such orders and religions (e.g. Thelema, the Temple of Set, etc.). This document aims to answer that question and to draw the spotlight on the differences between the Temple and other religious movements, as well as to identify the special unique distinctions that comprise the Temple's unique position among other movements. The synopses of other religions are simplistic for brevity (and to a fault). However, the aim is never to dismiss or derogate the other movements or religions but to underscore the individual positions the religions and similar movements inhabit in the modern sacroscape. If you feel we have treated your religion unfairly below, please contact us and suggest how we can portray it better.

Below, we list just a few religious or neo-spiritual movements and portray the main points in which the Temple of Chrysalis resembles them – and deviates from them in its own, unique spiritual system. While we concentrate on a few movements, the explanations illuminate the Temple's unique position in contrast to other such movements as well.

On Abrahamic Religions vs. the Temple of Chrysalis

(Disclaimer: Although the Abrahamic religions and their branches differ immensely from each other, they are more alike than separate. From the viewpoint of the Temple, they are discussed as one group.)

Whether a branch of Christianity, Islam, or Judaism, Abrahamic religions can be considered the polar opposites of the Temple in most of their main tenets. As monotheist structures that emphasize living to their scriptures to attain a good afterlife, these religions tend to shun most of the virtues the Temple celebrates. Indeed, many of the main teachings of the Temple can be counted among the deadly sins of Catholic Christianity. 

Likewise, none of the Abrahamic religions think well of personal hedonism, carnal pleasures, the use of magic, and so on. The Temple’s version of the golden rule of Christianity’s “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is “Do as you desire but bear the responsibility for your actions.”

On the Temple of Set vs. the Temple of Chrysalis

The Temple of Set is by its very nature a theistic (and monotheistic) organization, recognizing Set/Satan as a real and concrete god. Although its members include pantheists, monotheists, agnostics, spiritualists, and atheists, the Temple of Chrysalis is in principle set up as a non-theistic organization, recognizing no single living god and no single set (pun unintended) of living gods as something to be worshipped. Instead of a living god, the Temple of Chrysalis places its emphasis on the individual and their growth. It’s not important for a Chrysalid on whether there is a god or multiple gods or whether the gods are alive or dead: the existence of gods is just not of any relevance. The Chrysalids themselves are as gods, ascending towards subjective perfection through their lives. This makes the existence of external gods irrelevant. For a Chrysalid, the closest equivalent of gods are the Kaleidoscopes that are closer to spiritual ideas or abstract entities. 

As spiritual movements, the Temple of Set and the Temple of Chrysalis share many features. In both, advancement within the temples is driven by participating in organizational responsibilities, but main advancement comes through personal development. However, for a member of the Temple of Set, Xeper is about strengthening the soul / their individual psycho-centric immortal part through self-discovery for the purpose of attaining afterlife (instead of being dissolved). 

For a Chrysalid, thoughts on afterlife vary, and it in itself is a secondary concern. Instead, advancing and developing oneself in this life is the main driver. Attaining the Imago is the goal, not a tool for reaching that goal. One of the basic tenets of Chrysalis is “Live as if it was already part of your reality.” Even more importantly, imago in itself is not an end state for a Chrysalid. Instead, it is part of the great cycle of renewal, a significant milestone from which a Chrysalid will continue towards a new Imago, renewing and rebuilding themself on each successful rebirth in this life.

On Thelema vs. the Temple of Chrysalis

(Disclaimer: There are many different interpretations of Thelema, some closer and some further away from Temple of Chrysalis.)

Thelema is an ego and will centric way of thought. Of all the systems in this article, Thelema is the one probably sharing the most similarities with the Temple of Chrysalis. Still, the symbolism and a different relationship and approach to occult differentiates them from each other. Thelema’s emphasis is more on the known and verified occult, whereas Chrysalis – even though exploring also the Old Ways – highlights creating new and practicing the so-called reality shaping. Also the kaleidoscopic system differentiates Chrysalis from Thelema. 

In Thelema, true will is the main calling of one’s life, a final goal to attain and be: one grand destiny in life. True will doesn’t necessitate actual desire for something: it’s the great destiny within the universe and one’s deepest wants and needs. The importance is in one learning the True Will and getting rid of any false needs that stand in the way or disguise themselves as part of the True Will. While the Pillars of Morality in the Temple of Chrysalis may resonate with the followers of Thelema and while the Thelemite Book of Law might well resonate with some Chrysalids, the differences of thought are vivid.

While the Temple of Chrysalis is similarly dedicated to personal development, for a Chrysalid, there is no single grand destiny that can be reached for step by step: instead, the Imago can be reached via multiple stages of development and metamorphosis, and the process is cyclic, meaning that the Image stages are many. You can reach towards your Imago as an artist, and on emerging from your Chrysalis, start another personal journey. The Temple emphasizes on the journey, not the destination, while Thelema emphasizes slightly more the destination and the journey as means of attaining it. Yet, both systems understand that initiation is not just a ritual; it is a far deeper concept in one’s magical journey.

On the Church of Satan vs. the Temple of Chrysalis

(Disclaimer: Of course there are many cults and subdivisions and differing churches born based on LaVey’s Church of Satan; the below does not apply to all of them)

On paper, the Church of Satan shares many core beliefs with the Temple of Chrysalis: despite its name, the Church of Satan emphasizes atheism (albeit in a skeptical way), individualism and individual pride, reason and curiosity, force of will, and individual growth. All of these are important in the Temple of Chrysalis, up to the point that they are mandatory requirements for a Chrysalid to reach their Imago state. Likewise, the Church of Satan recognizes belief in its doctrine as an alignment and as a lifestyle a doctrine that guides and informs the ways of life of its followers, not a blind set of faith to be followed without reason. In this, the teachings of the Temple of Chrysalis are nearly identical. Even the views on systematic magic are very close to each other. The Church of Satan’s view on greater magic as ritualistic practice and psychodramatic catharsis aimed at concentrating one’s emotional energies – and lesser magic as applied psychology and will – can be seen as viewing the same system as the Temple of Chrysalis with just a slightly different lense. For both movements, pragmatic and practical override the dogmatic: “What works, works.” Likewise, the views on indulgence and hedonism match.

The focal difference in the philosophies of the Church and the Temple is in how they view individual evolution in life. For the Church, individual evolution is continuous and based on the will of the person. For the Temple, the first tenet is that the culmination of evolution is not one lifetime: it is the path one takes to reach one’s Imago state – and the path does not end there. Instead, reaching Imago is a zenith, not the zenith. It is a step on a staircase, not the ceiling.  It is the point when the individual’s universe contracts, the Big Crunch in which all the galaxies, suns, planets, and stardust of one’s existence return home, into a single fulfilled point of being that is ready for the next Big Bang, ready to start its journey into the next Imago. Secondly, while the Church believes the path to evolution is purely individual, for the Temple, an individual’s evolution is benevolently guided along their kaleidoscopic path, providing personality based paths and archetypes to ease finding one’s Imago.

On Buddhism vs. the Temple of Chrysalis

Although the casual observer may think they are similar, Buddhism and the Temple are polar opposites in practically all their thinking. In Buddhism, the suffering of mankind is caused by man’s needs and wants, and the main goal of a spiritual person is to let go of these needs. In the Temple, suffering is caused by people not daring to reach and grasp for what should be theirs. For a Chrysalid, the needs and wants should be celebrated, explored, and enjoyed – not shunned or rejected. Chrysalis accepts that suffering can be a force for good – you learn through suffering, and when there is a chance, you can learn through it.

For a Buddhist, the main goal is to learn to let go of the cycle of life and pain, to remove the excess of pleasure and material comforts. For a Chrysalid, the main goal is to live life to its fullest, so that on your deathbed, you can look back and see that you have taken every chance, enjoyed every moment, and grown to be what you wanted to be. Life is a wonderful gift and squandering it by rejecting life’s gifts and the pleasures of existence makes a Chrysalid shudder. Where a Buddhist aims to deny their primitive needs, a Chrysalid recognizes them and learns to make them their servant, not their master.

On Neo-Pagans / Wicca vs. the Temple of Chrysalis

(Disclaimer: Due to the humongous number of differing Neo-Pagan and Wiccan beliefs, the synopsis below is very simplistic)

It is inevitable that any new spiritual movement will be compared to Neo-Paganism or Wicca at some point. Though there are so many different forms of Neo-Paganism and Wiccan religions and spiritual movements as to it being unfair to group them into a single entry here, there are some unifying distinguishing features shared by most of them. Today, the most noteworthy of these are naturalism (especially in the form of harmony with nature) and the attempted reconstruction (though modernized) of old, typically pre-christian, region-specific beliefs. Most such movements are polytheistic or pantheistic, though there are monotheistic or purely spiritual atheistic or agnostic variants.

Though the Temple of Chrysalis is close to many Neo-Pagan and Wiccan branches in the respect of nature and somewhat aligned on the basics of how magical thought works, the similarities are fewer than the differences. The Temple emphasizes the individual, celebrating existence and evolution in this life. The Temple, while respecting nature and ecology, does not disregard modern advances in science, technology, and thought, but on the contrary, seeks and utilizes them. The Temple sees benevolent hedonism and joy desirable, and celebrates individual growth in our modern, technology driven society as well as in a rural setting. Also, to contrast with the typical theistic natures of these movements, the Temple is a non-theistic spiritual movement.

Chrysalis does not accept the division of magic into a dichotomy of polar opposites, black and white. Magic is magic. And magic is psychology. And science. And it is magic. The Temple recognizes the nuances of magic and that some magic can be inherently harmful, but Chrysalids do not condemn this as “Black Magic.” Instead, Chrysalids are taught to do as they will but bear the responsibility of their own actions.

The Distinguishing Characteristics of the Temple of Chrysalis

As can be seen above, the Temple has synergetic similarities with many other new religious or spiritual movements, and it is easy to find common discussion ground with the others. Even so, all of these movements focus on different methodologies, approach magic and individuality from differing perspectives, and view the world and the priorities of faith and spirituality from different angles, via different lenses, and through different methods, forming their own unique systems. 

In essence, the Temple of Chrysalis is a non-theist spiritual movement that emphasizes individual growth, functional psychodramatic and empathetic magic, the joys of life, and communal individuality. For the Temple, an unique angle is in the nature of the Imago. Reaching Imago is the goal of every Chrysalid, but it is not a single, life-long goal. Instead, it is a life-cycle of its own, a self-contained universe of possibilities and paths, culminating in all of those possibilities and paths converging into a single point of light – from which a journey to a new Imago can start forming. While the journey to Imago is a completeness in itself, it is not just the end, but the celebrated, glorious culmination and a new start all at once. 

As most of the movements above teach us, personal perfection is a goal to strive to, but can never be fully reached. As the Temple of Chrysalis teaches us, while full personal perfection cannot be reached, states of personal perfection are attainable – and they are the touchstones to new journeys. 

The second unique angle lies in the Temple’s use of kaleidoscopes to help initiates understand themselves deeper – and to provide paths the followers can take to ease their ways towards their Imagos. Kaleidoscopes are mechanisms for both personal reflection and growth: understanding your personality and inner self are powerful tools to help you grow as a person and to burst out of your cocoon as a better individual.

This small guide is not meant to prove that the Temple is a superior system in comparison to other movements. The Pain of Change – Addicted to misery and suffering

Why does someone stay in an abusive relationship? Why are we stuck with life that we know makes us feel bad? Why do we feel even more pain when we try to get rid of the pain? Why does it hurt so much to try to change, even when we know that change is the best possible option?

Spiritual metamorphosis is not a nice thing.

When I talk about Chrysalis, referring to an individual’s change, I’m not talking about any neat little lifestyle change. Chrysalis is about preparing the Chrysalis magician for the awakening. It could be described as part of a longer-term initiation phase of one’s life.

Chrysalis is not just about physical acts. It’s not just about losing a lot of weight or getting a house. It is about mental reconstruction. Physical deeds should be the consequences of these mental deeds, or alternatively, the concrete acts should be able to trigger some mental processes that will serve the change. In order to have a completely different life, a lot of things need to fundamentally change. Above all, yourself.

The words change, transformation, and metamorphosis have different meanings. Change is a loose term that refers to something becoming something else. Transformation has a bit more precise nuance, as it means that something or someone changes holistically – especially externally – and usually in a better direction. Metamorphosis, in turn, refers to a series of events that result in a partial or complete deformation. When the egg turns to a caterpillar, the caterpillar becomes a chrysalis, and the chrysalis transforms into a butterfly, this whole cycle is called metamorphosis.

The phenomenon experienced in the Temple of Chrysalis is a spiritual and mental metamorphosis. Things that happen externally, such as changing the appearance, often are symbols of what is going on inside us. In Temple of Chrysalis’s metamorphosis, one does not seek just a more comfortable life, but a total reconstruction of your ways of thinking. In the kind of way that allows man to operate on many different levels, in different realities. So that the birch branch ceases to be just a birch branch. It becomes a magical formation of fractals where you can outline what the birch branch is concretely, what it is at the cellular level, what it is symbolically, what it is magically, and what the birch branch’s reality is.

 “When you are in the throes of pain wondering if this makes any sense: yes. It does. If not, change the way you carry out your metamorphosis.”

For a person to begin to operate holistically, he or she must dismantle, in his or her opinion, various blocks that prevent the expansion of understanding. When the real Chrysalis begins, relationships fall, jobs are being left, landscapes change, bridges burn, and handkerchiefs wear out. That is the nature of Chrysalis.

It’s pretty damn stressful. You need to kill something from your past. You need to change your opinions and meet the mistakes that you have made. You will admit to yourself how wrong you were about so many things. You may need to realize that unpleasant things must be done if you want to feel good. You might even realize that what you have been taught to believe is right… is only “right” because someone told you so.

No wonder our systems get so overheated. It’s destroying and rebuilding of ego to go through Chrysalis. That stuff doesn’t really feel like some nice spa holiday. That is why at first you must fix your base and make sure that the basics of life are in order. First, you learn to sleep, eat, exercise, and put that phone away. Because if you can’t control yourself to put your phone away and go to bed on time, how can you do anything more challenging? There isn’t much room for spiritual transformation, if you haven’t developed willpower. Metamorphosis requires strength, energy, stress tolerance, and willpower. The Chrysalid should reach for the state where he/she is capable of rising on top of the trivial challenges.

People don’t make progress because they are so focused on everything that doesn’t work instead of what is it that they want. Whining is the easy solution, because it feels as if we are doing something. When we actually aren’t. Don’t get me wrong. It is a different thing to go through emotions. Every now and then you need to be able to say “Shitfuckdick I am so angry today!” But when we are constantly looking for validation to stay where we are, it becomes an obstacle. It’s like seeking for the justification for the thought “There is nothing I can do.”

But that’s a lie. There is almost always something you can do. Now someone comes and says “But I can’t just do X! It is way too much work. You can’t just assume that someone can do it. You can’t have that high expectations.”

Aaaand that kind of thinking is what separates successful people from the not so successful. 

The vital thing to know is that mental suffering is normal. It’s like chemotherapy, where harmful cancer cells are killed. When you are in the throes of pain, wondering if this makes any sense: yes. It does. If not, change the way you carry out your metamorphosis.

What if it starts to feel that every time we try to escape the misery of life, we somehow always end up back to square one? If the current life is so harmful, why does it hurt to let go?

Because misery is the narcissistic companion who you are addicted to. And this abusive companion pushes all the chemical buttons to make you stay.

Why are we addicted to misery?

We have an unfortunate way of clinging to the walls of our minds. We become attached to things that are hurtful to us. Sometimes the factors that hold us back or prevent us from living our dream life are those from which we also get joy or security. Such as a relationship, job, or emotional eating. Yeah, we are a bit twisted like that. But to quote my Chrysalid Tiseyo: “Isssoookeeei”. Because when we understand that this is happening, we can do something about it.

Then why? Why do we stay in that troubled relationship, even though mostly we feel numb, average, dissatisfied, or even violated and abused? The keyword is “mostly.” Do you know why narcissists are so addictive? Because after you have been mistreated for so long, even the smallest gesture of love suddenly feels ecstatic. If you have to eat only potatoes every day, it feels incredible when you get a full meal. You feel grateful. The joy and relief are so big that we forget that usually, people should get a full meal every day.

If we get this rewarding joy at least occasionally, we may experience so-called intermittent reinforcement. Intermittent reinforcement is a conditioning schedule in which a reward (well, it can also be punishment) is not administered every time the desired response is performed. So you don’t know if you get rewarded, even if you did the right thing. But you always know that you might! This kind of irregular rewarding is particularly effective, for example, in causing addiction. 

It’s not only manipulative relationships that make you addicted with intermittent reinforcement. And overall, many ways of reinforcement happen in several areas in our life, constantly. (So no need to get all neurotic about whether your spouse is using intermittent reinforcement, when only now and then bringing flowers, and always a different bush. That’s not the purpose here.) A straightforward example of how this works is one of the most known addictions out there.

Gambling.

"There is an increased likelihood the desired behavior will continue with intermittent reinforcement conditioning and the behavior lasts longer than continuous reinforcement. Gambling is an example of intermittent reinforcement. You don't win every time or win the same amount when using a slot machine- this wouldn't be exciting or fun. The reinforcement is intermittent and causes a positive and euphoric response in the brain that in some circumstances can lead to gambling addiction."

This addiction behavior, in turn, is due to dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is very familiar to me as a community manager. Part of my job is to know how to get your dopamines to flow. If you are at our Discord server, do you ever get the feeling that you need to return, check the channels and say at least something?  There is nothing wrong with you. It is me doing my job. And me knowing how to do my job means that it is elementary for me to see how these addictions can also be created outside the Internet.

Despite the misconceptions, dopamine does not hit you after being rewarded. But dopamine makes us repeat the kind of behavior which may lead to a reward. Dopamine is meant to teach you to do things that make life easier. However, this system is quite flawed because the human went to piss on his own ankle by inventing social media, among other things. Dopamine seeks the best way to learn, and it usually means the fastest way. And guess what happens to your potential addiction, when just one push of a button is enough to give a quick, noticeable reward? Yup. That’s right. The simplicity and easy solutions are where dopamine really starts to go awry.

What does this have to do with your misery?

An unhappy life is like a Facebook feed. You scroll and scroll it down because you remember seeing someone posting something nice a while ago. Maybe soon you’ll find another nice post again! You may not realize that this “hunt of the next nice post” is happening, but your brain does. You keep scrolling all the rubbish that you don’t even care about. Just when you start to think that hey, there’s no point in scrolling, and maybe you should do something else, your feed rewards you with a cute cat video. “Awww!”

The video feeds your rewarding system for a minute so wonderfully that after that, you continue to scroll. You just had a reward, so maybe there is another reward to be found soon. You just don’t know if you find it in 5 minutes or 30 minutes. 

And scrolling is effortless. Easier than studying at least. Just like staying in misery is easier than doing something to stop the suffering. Stationary is safe. No need to do anything. No need to face everything. You can just be. No risk of conflict or anything nasty like that. One can just safely scroll through life.

This kind of thinking is happening in the background when your friend tells you that maybe you should quit your long-term job where you constantly get exhausted and are not happy, and you say, “Yeah, but I do have fun sometimes…”. Or, when your friends worry about your controlling companion when you two are getting back together after the fifth serious break-up attempt – and you defend: “Yeaaah, but he/she does allow me to do my own things every now and then… it is just about compromises. This time it will work!” 

Yup. Just keep scrolling.

Maybe there is a new cat video coming at some point.

Stockholm syndrome

What does the addiction to misery have in common with Stockholm Syndrome?

“But Luminary, it is not so easy!” Nope, it is not. I know, love. There are always things that affect to our situation. For more than six years I was in an abusive relationship. Even though I realized that life might have something better to offer, I didn’t really believe it because I had no experience with it. Because of the controlling relationship, I was also unable to form many friendships. This isolation left very few options for my human need to cling and focus on something. So all my love was pushed into one direction. The same that killed my confidence, slaughtered my identity, made me neurotic and also hurt me physically.

The constant pain of one’s current state of misery is a bit like Stockholm Syndrome. The state you’ve become accustomed to is like your capturer of whom you have, in a twisted way, become fond of.

One of the psychological reasons for the emergence of Stockholm Syndrome is the isolated state of the captured. Only the input of your kidnapper is available. The same could be thought about the pain you are stuck with. If your mind is isolated from other realities, you will not be as able to perceive what other possibilities you have. You may subconsciously even imagine you deserve your low status. Your mind feeds you with vicious propaganda that your misery is better and that you would not be able to change anyway. That is why the Temple of Chrysalis relies so much on different realities as well as exercising the flexibility of the mind. We do it to break these labels and chains.

“Yup. Just keep scrolling. Maybe there’s a new cat video coming soon.”

You may get stuck in an unfavorable situation because your reward system has gotten skewed. In the relationship that I mentioned, I learned that the greatest feelings of love always followed a violent or aggressive episode. This, of course, was because my suddenly apologetic partner bombarded me with love whenever he was about to lose me. When a person lives in an unfavorable state and experiences a lot of evil, the surprising expression of love feels immensely rewarding. It’s like a jackpot.

What this caused in me was the entanglement of love …with the feeling of fear. I was very young when this happened. In critical age. I grew up to it.

Even today, I can’t properly fall in love before I’m scared.

But I’m fighting it.

What can be done about this, then? 

The most important thing is just to become completely conscious and aware of yourself and your ways of operating. You can start practicing your awareness by becoming aware of your own social media behavior or smartphone addiction. From that, you can proceed to observe also other patterns that you tend to repeat.

 Whenever you are about to get drained back to your old life, recall all the situations where the old life has hurt you. And visualize all your dreams and how amazing it will feel when you have your wonderful, new life and freedom. Remember that nobody else can truly make you happy. Only you, yourself. Surely, a person can be your tool. But that’s when you are just an emotional vampire, sucking your needs from the other person. If your happiness is based on expectations given to someone else to fulfill, you will easily become a prisoner. And you might get fucked up really bad.

Even today when someone asks me why did I stay in the abusive relationship, I feel the weirdest flow inside me. It is hard to describe. Like something triggered some kind of a hypnosis that makes me say: “But I was really annoying and pathetic so I guess I deserved it all…”

“Pathetic”. One of his favorite words to use about me when he was angry. If a young girl came to me and told me she deserved to be hit because she was pathetic, I might be a bit enraged.

You see. I am not kicking your butt because I would think it’s somehow easy. I am kicking your butt because I AM that girl who used to think she deserved the abuse and violence. And I know now I did not deserve it. And YOU don’t deserve it. You deserve everything that you desire and are ready to work for.

Pain of Change Addicted to Misery

At this point in writing this article, I get a call from the Finnish ELY Center. I have applied for corona-related support money for my company – the same that hosts this site – because the corona situation has absorbed a large part of my income. I have waited for the decision for a month and my application was praised by professionals. Everyone was sure it would go through.

It did not.

And not even because I had done something wrong. But because the center has been communicating inadequately: the application said the support would be given to a company of 1-5 people. I am the only worker of my limited company. The funds were meant, for example, to help to hire someone. “Yeah, but it kind of means an employee. In addition to the entrepreneur. So in a way, it’s 2-6 and not 1-5. Unfortunately, you are not eligible for this support. ”

This means a loss of EUR 86 000. And it gives a bitch slap to my face that my company is, frankly, screwed.

“It is completely fine to give up on harmful things.  But when it comes to building your new life, giving up means that you, completely yourself, with your own actions, destroy all the remaining possibilities that you might have had. ” 

My mind feels blurry when the center representative spends 6 minutes on her monologue, trying to give mostly to herself a justification of why the application cannot be accepted. I start feeling sick. All the effort. All the wait. I did everything I could. The call ends and the carpet is pulled from underneath.

I want to throw my laptop to the wall. I want to end this here. I want to stop writing this article and curl up crying in the corner of the couch. Except I don’t have even a couch. My nose, swollen from crying, drains all the way to my chin. I even feel tempted to succumb to my old self-destruction and pull my wrists open.

This is how much the old life and old thinking patterns attract us.

Like a martyr, I am tempted to seek justification to return to easy misery, where I can go on autopilot like a ruminating cow, grinding grass. Fortunately, I recognize this behavior. Does identification make it easier? Of course not yet. I would like to show the middle finger to this counseling version of myself and throw a tantrum. Fuck you, Ida.

But I also recognize this. It’s part of the thing. During the earlier similar situations I’ve already learned that even if it does not ease the pain now, it will facilitate progression. The point is to allow yourself to feel how you feel, without slipping back. To rise above the unnecessarily harsh emotional reaction that succumbs from the old you. Awareness helps you take just two steps back, instead of ten.

It is worth giving up only when opportunities no longer exist or when they are no longer worth achieving. It is completely fine to give up on harmful things.  But when it comes to building your new life, giving up means that you, completely yourself, with your own actions, destroy all the remaining possibilities that you might have had. 

What are the benefits of pain

I am a firm believer in focusing on the future. Every time I forget this and drown back to my negative thinking, things tend to explode. Yeah, I’m a pretty strong reality shaper like that. So whenever the spiritual people are talking about positive thinking (–even though sometimes you feel that they must be drugged to be that docile–) they do have a point. And it’s not even only the law of attraction – it is the basic rule of magic. However, I also believe that it’s way more complicated than that. Negative emotions are there for a reason. When I say focus on your dreams and act as if they were true, I don’t mean that you are supposed to suppress you feelings or ignore them. I mean that you need to shift your “giving shits” to a new direction. 

Then why? Why do I think pain and misery can also be a good thing?

Pain can activate you if you don’t freeze.

Pain helps you to form your own boundaries. You will learn to identify your boundaries and you can decide whether to expand them or erect walls.

Pain breaks. But something new is being built from the breakup.

Pain protects. It is the defense mechanism of your body and mind. It warns you, sometimes a little too much. It is sometimes like a hypersensitive fire alarm. You just need to learn to tune it to the right level.

Pain inspires. Great art is born of great pain. Some of the most touching songs are made of pain.

When harnessed right, pain also brings change. And this the biggest benefit of pain. There is a lot of power in it. It drives us away from itself. The challenge comes from the fact that before you can overcome pain, overcoming itself is usually painful. A bit like a hill that you try to climb over. The closer you get to the high escalation point, the bigger the demanded effort and the sharper the pain. When you reach the top of the hill, the most painful point of your change, you have two directions: either give up and fall backward – or survive over the escalation point, suddenly noticing that you are sliding forward with the rapid speed of progress.

Or, if you enjoy video games, just think about the last levels. The difficulty increases, your frustration grows, and more monsters are appearing. It is an indicator that you are going in the right direction. There might even be the ultimate boss battle. This battle you must now win.

Change your tears into a passionate battle cry. And when you are ready to let go of the pain, do it.

How to cope with the pain of metamorphosis in Chrysalis?

 

  • Be aware that pain is part of the process.
  • Get inspired by the pain: write and draw it on paper. Make a song. Or do something crazy. This cult was born from pain!
  • Recognize whether your pain is an indicator of direction – or is it the old habits trying to make you stay in your bittersweet addiction of misery.
  • Enjoy breaking up and let Actias support you towards spirituality. Getting broken eventually means reconstruction. But you have got to work for it.
  • Sit down and talk to Trogonoptera. Why am I suffering? What does suffering serve? Why is this pain happening right now? Is my pain commensurate with the situation?
  • Ask yourself: how do you see the situation? How do you feel and think? What do you believe needs to happen next?
  • Record you talking to yourself. Using your stream of consciousness, speak out loud everything that comes to your mind. Don’t censor. Bring it on. No one will hear what you say. Who knows. Maybe you will find something new.
  • The very moment when you have strength to focus on your future and good things instead of all the bad, do that. Stop wasting resources on suffering (unless you are a masochist). Use them for the future.
  • Do rituals. Such as Tears of Trogonoptera (Members)

Pain is necessary on your path towards Imago. An unhappy and dissatisfied person must undergo a real mental and possibly physical change in order to turn their lives into something new. Only after getting rid of what has been a nuisance to you, weaving the traps of malice to keep you trapped, will you be able to be reborn. If you get attracted by a few tiny dewdrops on a spider web, you’ll fly into the web over and over again. One day, the spider might no longer let you go.

When you feel pain, you always know that something is happening. If you are trying to leave behind something toxic in your life, and it hurts, try to breathe and relax and keep in mind that this is your addiction talking. This pain is often a withdrawal symptom. And the withdrawal symptom means that you are starting to cure.

One might wonder, why don’t I go to individuals and tell these same things to them. Why don’t I just go there and advice them personally to leave their old life, unless it’s requested?

Because I believe that the true empowering experience happens when you do these discoveries yourself. I can give a general kick to the butt to make people question their life. But it is you, yourself, who makes the decisions. That is the first step towards higher levels life.

On victim mentality

Victim mentality is when a person thinks they are a victim of other people, circumstances, or other external factors, and gets stuck in this condition. They usually shift the blame away from themselves and develop their negative emotions, such as bitterness and anger. A Chrysalid seeks to recognize indicators of victim mentality and handle them so that they do not harm their self-development or mar other people’s joy of success. For if in your reality, others may not succeed or be happy about doing so, how could you ever deserve to find joy in your success?

There is often a completely logical and very understandable trigger behind a victim mentality. Something bad happens, and it has a traumatizing effect. It is only natural to be out of sorts and angry, and go through many kinds of emotions, if one experiences something harmful. It is perfectly acceptable and normal to feel crushed for instance after receiving an injury that takes one’s ability to walk. It is human—not yet victim mentality. The limitations are very true and real, and to make light of them would be cruel and nasty. Drawing the line is challenging, it’s cultural and subjective, and I ask you to read this text with the assumption that my intentions are good, and that I’m genuinely only referring to the things a person could actually affect. I’m not trying to mobilize a paraplegic or tell a depressed person to cheer up; I’m trying to get you to think if there still is something more you could do in order to be happier.

So, emotional reactions, as well as prolonged grief after a crisis in life, are normal. The shift towards a victim mentality takes place when this condition persists, and one’s attitude towards life crystallizes into the words “There’s nothing I can do, because life and other people.”

Many have a searing thirst for spirituality, for the healing of mental pain, and for good pointers, but opportunities to set things right are sadly often let pass by, because people are so focused on feeling sorry for themselves. It feels easier to put the blame on someone else than to think what one could do oneself to mend the situation.

It is typical that if one suggests a solution to someone with a victim mentality, nothing seems to suffice. Pointing out the issue may cause a furious adverse reaction, as the tired and stressed individual feels deadlocked. Occasionally, sympathy from the environment feeds the victim mentality enough to make, for instance, a bad health a strong part of one’s identity. Staying put is easier than moving, and getting stuck in the old is easier than a process of change. In change, one is forced to face also one’s own negative qualities in an unsparing way, which can feel frightening. It is a stinging blow to our identity to face our flaws eye to eye. And exactly this blow would be so healthy and advantageous!

I myself have been a victimist in many aspects of life. Of all the things I’ve rid myself of to enable change, victim mentality has been one of the most important. Victim mentality is a paralyzer that both poisons the victimist and robs the people around them of air. My own victim mentality had been really difficult for me to recognize and even more difficult to admit. Having observed the people around me, I would contend that I’m not alone with this experience. Hence, while reflecting on your own victimhood, be gentle towards yourself. The subject is not easy, and it’s perfectly all right to go through one’s various defense mechanisms before any conclusive findings. Also remember that the phenomenon is very common and occurs because of your mind speaking to you and protecting you from further negative experiences. Or at least trying to. For usually, the victimist eventually becomes attuned to see mostly the negative, and in their paralyzed state does not accumulate experiences of positivity. A vicious cycle of unhappiness is guaranteed.

Victim mentality has several forms. There are more personal things, but also social forms of group victimism. One form of victim mentality I have often encountered, for example, is blaming others for one’s own poor finances. I’m Finnish, and my home country easily counts among the world’s wealthiest. We have gone through poverty as well, but the situation is thoroughly dissimilar to, say, the 19th century. Our system is built so that anyone actively and unpromptedly seeking assistance will get it. Occasionally very strenuously and by beating one’s head against the wall—but that’s significantly more than in many other states. But this is exactly where the stumbling block lies. When even free support requires the level of activity of providing one’s details and proving one’s situation to the authorities, the frustration and fatigue get one to criticize the system. We are so used to getting things on a gold platter that we forget there could as well be no platter at all. I have been in that situation myself and complained in the same manner. And now I’m aware that I was a bit silly. Understandably of course, but silly all the same.

Once upon a time, I had a discussion with someone close to me about their financial situation. They were a student, but living in Finland, were receiving a study grant and entitled to a government-guaranteed student loan. One day they were angrily expounding on their money situation, because they were unable to attend a hobby event due to a lack of funds. “We students are poor, because politicians are stealing other people’s money! This is wrong! Politicians should have their money taken away!”, they raged with all their fire.

“Have you taken a student loan?”, I asked.
“I haven’t.”
“Why not? It’s a really good add-on, and would help you immediately.”
“Mother said it’s not a good idea to take a loan.”
“Your mother… And which politician has stolen your money?”
“I don’t know…”
“In Finland, politicians work pretty long hours, represent the people, and all the while subject themselves to the abuse of others. They are in public office. That’s why they earn a lot.”
“Yes but students receive way too little money, because it all goes to the politicians!”
“All of it, really?”
“No…”
“They receive a salary. Is that stealing?”
“I suppose not…”
“If you worked a lot and earned a lot, what would you think? Would you then want to give your money away to students?”
“(Silence.)”
“How about you take that student loan?”
“I suppose I should…”

When you cast an eye over true poverty and look at the news photos of bloated bellies or orphaned children rummaging through garbage for food, it makes the demands of those with low incomes in welfare states that others should give them the fruits of their labour, and if they don’t, they are shit, occasionally feel slightly absurd. Since the situation in Finland actually is really good in comparison with many other countries, but also because Finnish people love to fight for social justice (which I consider a very good thing, and a necessity for the development of welfare!), the lowest income decile has become the definition of poverty. Usually even this lowest income decile have a roof over their heads.

This does not mean things should not be improved. It does not mean those with low incomes don’t have it difficult and miserable, the price level being high. Hardship is certainly still experienced by many, and I myself remember well the times when my daily food money was 90 cents (if I didn’t top up my travel card). And yes, I also played the victim and blamed my tiredness on a nutrient-deficient diet as I slurped up instant noodles—and at the same time I admit I was too lazy to prepare healthy, affordable food. And too proud to ask for help, and too conflicted to fetch a food aid bag. Because “that food bag should be fetched early in the morning”. If you really are dying of hunger, I think that butt moves over to that food aid line quite efficiently, even in the small hours if need be.

I still understand so well, why this is hard. I understand the tiredness, I understand illness. I understand our chemistries work in insidious ways. I understand how much it hurts having to struggle each day when there is no end in sight. The difference comes from whether one places the blame for the situation on the rest of the world. I used my tiredness and the sordidness of the world as an excuse to not doing much about it. And I didn’t dare to ask for a raise after receiving one rejection. It was defeating. And I wasn’t nearly as well acquainted with my fickle mind as I am now. Instead of learning better ways to ask for a raise, I got stuck in the idea that I apparently just don’t deserve better. Thinking this way, I created a label in my reality: “I don’t deserve more money. Therefore it’s useless to even try.”

This label was all my own creation.

So, much remains to be done when it comes to welfare. But what I’m after is ending the unjustified blaming of others—and pulling one’s own weight in life. If a person’s survival is really at stake, they will also do anything and everything to survive.

Another common form of victim mentality is to blame not doing as well as one could on the good fortune of others. It is true that there are privileged people in the world, and this privilege should be examined on the appropriate scale. But justifying one’s own unfavourable condition with the privilege of another is perhaps one of the most toxic forms of victim mentality. Besides, you cannot know what the background of the other person holds.

One time, I lashed out publicly in a certain conflict situation. I defended the attack, because I considered it okay to call out bad behaviour. My friend decided to mediate the conflict and, to my surprise, directed their criticism at me, arguing that I must understand this person is having a difficult time, and take back my words. That I must understand because I’m a trendsetter and I hold authority, and therefore can’t publicly lash out like that. I must understand and tolerate, because I’m privileged. I must understand, because this person was suffering from an illness and was destitute. That this person could not have as many opportunities to go and do as I did, and they could never get the things I could.

…At that time I was holding back tears in intense endometriosis pains, suffering from severe depression and, unknowingly, from intense trauma symptoms. Not to mention the ten thousand or so in debts that had me constantly stressing about when I’d end up in distraint.

I didn’t exactly feel terribly privileged.

However, the moment was extremely important, because it gave me an insight into victimism, privilege, and my own internal strength. Despite all my mental and physical pains, I had something that had never been quenched. Even in the darkest moments of my life, I heard people referring to “that something” inside me. Some called it a “glow”, others a “sparkle”. Yet others spoke of a magical passion, some had even pondered over my pheromones. My mentor spoke of the touch of Lempo. I had repeatedly been asked the question “What are you?” At that time I had yet to come up with the term Prefulge.

It’s not that I’m not aware of what true privilege means. I fully acknowledge that some have been dealt more cards to begin with. But then there are those who learn to read other people and to have discussions with them to negotiate for cards. There are those who learn the strategy by heart to make it in the game, and those who cunningly manage to end the game with more cards than anyone else in the table. They haven’t quit the game at the outset just because they started off with a bad hand. “Yeah you know guys, this ain’t gonna work, I have such a shitty hand. You play without me, I’ll go sulk in the corner.”

No one should get into the mentality that one’s own work effort and success are things to be apologized for. That makes no sense at all! It’s one thing to be grateful and acknowledge one’s privilege, and another to have to feel bad for working hard for one’s success. In addition, one shouldn’t take bad behaviour from anyone just because one is doing better. And nobody should tolerate your bad behaviour if they are doing better than you. We can understand another’s reasons, but there is no need to accept malice.

Never, ever justify your own discontent and lack of effort by someone else’s privilege. Your final success in life isn’t determined by some George-Bertina from Backwatersby having inherited their parents while you have not. That you’re marginalized doesn’t mean that “so, this is what my life is, and it’s other people’s fault, so there’s no use doing anything“. It’s different to find that one has been discriminated against in e.g. a negotiating table for being a woman—than to explain one’s entire limited career development by being a woman. Certain things can impede your actions, but they are not an insurmountable obstacle. On the contrary: An individual who has just gone through pain is strong, for they can appreciate moments of success and aspire upward. During this journey of ascension, they will learn more than anyone born with a golden spoon in their mouth.

Privileged or not, there’s always work behind success. Writing off success as a result of privilege is highly offensive and trivializes the great amount of work put in by the achiever. It’s a spit in the face of effort, and at worst devalues something really delicate and personal. How would it feel if you came down with MS, and after a couple of years of battling, numerous hours of physiotherapy, unsuccessful medication trials, scary attacks, and uncertainty, you would get up on your feet and walk over to the corner store for the first time, and then someone came and told you that your achievement is of no value, since you are white, cis, straight, and live in a welfare state and have received treatment for these reasons? It’s one thing to recognize and be grateful for one’s privilege, and another to victimize oneself and belittle someone else’s achievements based on how they began their life.

 

Now, think about the last year:

  • How much time did you voluntarily, with actions originating from yourself, use on developing yourself?
  • Did you try something you have never tried before?
  • Did you ask for help with unsolved problems? Did you truly and clearly ask?
  • Did you learn a new skill?
  • Did you call the doctor when you got symptoms?
  • Did you try to sort out your finances by making a spreadsheet of your expenses? Did you ask the bank for help?
  • Did you borrow when you couldn’t pay a bill?
  • Did you send job applications, and if you did, did you make an effort, or did you copypaste your typo-ridden CV around without having it proofread by someone else?
  • Did you create a Facebook page for your talent? Did you learn social media marketing?
  • Did you try what happens when you sleep 8.5 hours every night for a week?
  • Did you seek medication for sleeping problems? Did you try ASMR? Porn? Did you put your phone away an hour before bedtime?
  • Did you decide to hold on to normal working hours for a week, without working any overtime?
  • Did you try medication for your symptoms? Did you seek a second opinion? A third?
  • Did you read writings on how to become “a better person™”? …Did you put any of these theories into practice?
  • How many times did you give up when there could still have been paths to follow? How many times were you about to give up, but lifted your head up and rammed yourself through thick and thin?

Strength to your day, Chrysalid. Life isn’t always easy. But you have the means to always make it a little better.

Making use of emotions

The Temple of Chrysalis looks at emotions as allies that can, when correctly harnessed, increase, decrease, emphasize, create, or remove experiences.

By manipulating emotions and our way of thinking, we can affect our wellbeing. Emotions are like water. We can let it flow freely in the river, or create dams. We can investigate what kinds of winds make the water move, what makes rain fall upon the ground, what factors harden water into glacial ice, and what makes it evaporate dry. If we get very enthusiastic, we can distill other compounds out of water.

An ecstatic, inspired, and sparkling state of happiness is magnificent. When adding the spiritual link to the universe, we are talking about an experience which will not easily be forgotten. I am lucky to have experienced this several times already. And I want to teach you to reach it too.

For example, nausea can be meddled with, though it isn’t easy. It requires practice. First you need to find the buttons which make the bad feeling less bad when you push them. Then you need to remember where in your mind these buttons lay. Every time you push the button, pushing it down becomes easier with less friction. If you don’t push the button, nothing will happen. Stroking it with your fingertip doesn’t yet do anything.

At the same time, you can affect good emotions and increase their intensity. Focusing and truly gourmandizing on the emotion, you can at best get even more out of it. Combining in a fitting way and throwing yourself in the right direction, you can turn a mediocre situation into a pleasant one. Imagine going to a beach. You can either just “go to the beach”—or you can go to the beach and maximize the positive feelings the visit creates for you. You can just breathe for a moment and bury your toes into the sand, grateful for being able to do it. You can let the wind come to you, and close your eyes, feeling the physical caress of nature on your skin.

Let your senses lead you, take the impulses they offer and connect these impulses to your emotions. Focus on the experience and throw yourself into it internally. Explaining the expression “throw yourself” is somewhat challenging, as it feels quite abstract. In my own mind, this kind of augmenting and emphasizing of a feeling happens in a very specific manner. 

If I stop right now and reach into myself by writing one paragraph of pure stream of consciousness, you might get a picture how this could happen:

At first, I feel excitement and happiness for the process of writing. Joy for starting this process. A feeling of happiness originating from inspiration flashes in my mind, so I grab it and focus my mind on it. Oh. Well, ain’t I quite foking inspired! Nice! I seek out the areas in myself where I feel this. For example, the bursting, impatient breathing which reminds me of the feeling of being romantically in love. I can emphasize this physical emotion by slightly tensing my muscles as if performing the bursting a little more stronger way a couple of times. A physical sensation begins to increase my mental emotion which makes me smile out of excitement. I point out the smile to myself and smile a little wider.

 

I want more.

 

So, I smile even wider and close my eyes. I gasp for breath, and an almost erotic moan escapes my lips from the intensity of the sensation.

 

There we go. Now I’m writing the text with tears in my eyes as my inner outburst of emotions feels so stupendously good. As if I’m having some sort of spiritual orgasm.

 

Time for a coffee break.

This kind of feasting on emotions can be taken even further. Especially if the situation is disturbing or distressing you, intentional gourmandizing on emotions may help. If the emotional state is gnawed clean and thoroughly lived, the mind processes it to such an extreme that there is nothing more left in the issue to work through. The mind gets bored and finds something else. As if we turn the gas all the way up and let it burn out.

By researching your own emotions, you might also find your shadow sides. Emotional reactions tell a lot about our conception of reality. Unexplained antipathies or negative opinions of others can in fact be reflections of your own attributes. For example, a person who is afraid and blames his partner is thinking about someone else, can in fact be reflecting his own need to think about others. Admitting these features to oneself is one of the most challenging fields of examining emotions. Finding a reality anomaly is never a bad thing! On the contrary, the one who is able to find his weaknesses and take improving them as a part of their chrysalis will create a considerably more genuine and whole Imago.

Most of the pros of emotions are surely inferred with common sense. It is also important to point out that emotions are an extremely effective tool in reality shaping. Emotions are directly connected to your energy and vibration, which in turn are the foundation pillars or reality shaping. Some of my greatest magical deeds I have accomplished indeed by letting the blazing emotion wing my energy in the right direction. Especially when you want to send a specific kind of energy, it is quite beneficial if the energy was first available somewhere. It is not essential but useful. So why wouldn’t we take the advantage of all that is offered?

The Übermensch way of looking down on primitivity and emotions is amusing in my eyes. I haven’t met a single person who despised emotions and was happy at the same time. Disgust and contempt towards emotions are emotions themselves to begin with, so this kind of thinking creates an internal paradox. Indeed, pushing emotional, happy people down seems to mainly be a way for the unhappy and angry to lift themselves up. Sour grapes. I have also never met a person who would e.g. talk against primitivity and sexuality and not have any problems with his own sexuality.

People tend to try to keep their self-image as solid as possible, and admitting the experience of imperfection can sometimes be pretty difficult. Thus it is easier to say “Primitivity and pleasure-seeking is for inferior animals” than “I have mental or physical issues with my sexuality. Since I cannot deal with this subject, I denounce the whole concept as evil, so that I don’t feel incomplete.

The human being is not created to be emotionless. An emotionless person causes anomalies among his nearest and dearest with his lack of empathy and is more likely to damage his surroundings. Emotions do not replace reason. But neither can reason ever fully replace what emotions give us. Emotions can be so abstract they cannot be verbalized. Rationalizing emotions requires understanding them at as deep a level as possible. There is no pure reason without emotion. It will be much easier for you to live your life and interact with your surroundings if you are capable of dealing with emotions and feelings.

Of course, things are not that simple. There are many mental and also physical factors in our emotional regulation and the chemistry behind the feelings. (At least every person with a womb knows this…) Having an understanding of these states helps a Chrysalid. For example, alexithymia means a set of personality traits characterized by difficulties recognizing and processing emotions. Alexithymic individuals are often more conservative, more formulaic, and “robot-like”, and processing emotions might cause an alexithymic person to feel bad. When you don’t have the same kind of contact with your emotions, emotion-based experiences of pleasure won’t arise in the same way either. The set of traits varies from level to level between individuals. Hence the concept is not black and white.

Alexithymia may be a challenge to following Chrysalis, but it certainly isn’t an obstacle. An alexithymic individual fits perfectly in with the kaleidoscope of Parthenos, for instance. This science- and structure-focused kaleidoscope offers the opportunity to serve the Temple of Chrysalis with sharp observations, explaining theories, and finding causal connections. At the same time, an alexithymic person should adopt Lamproptera as their opposing kaleidoscope, through which to get a converse point of view and to learn about another kind or reality and emotional life. And possibly Dryocampa, which helps with social interactions. However, in Parthenos, an alexithymic person can shine and sparkle with his already existing traits.

Alexithymia often traces back to childhood, but incidents during the course of your life can also tamper with your emotional regulation. I have long ago lived, from a psychological point of view, through a certain kind of emotionally deprived state. It was a trauma-based condition. In it, my mind in all its fineness decided that it is now better for Miss Luminary to shut down her emotional bank lest the system overload. In retrospect, I understand what an ingenious and magnificent defense mechanism this was. I didn’t have tools to process what had happened. So I went into shutdown mode to protect my innermost from further damage.

Even though I wouldn’t trade away my experience, I would also never want it back permanently without good reason. I was like a meaningless ghost, to whom nothing mattered. On some level, I wanted things to matter again. So I sought experiences, each fiercer than the last, to get even a pinch of something. If just adrenaline.

No matter how I tried to make this emotionless state something fancy and cool, it wasn’t real. It was the twisted reality of an unwell person whose anomalies prevented happiness. I also remember well how, step by step, the emotions became rebuilt. I had to relearn many things and to work especially on empathy. Into particular processing I took the concept of love, and really contemplated its significance to myself, others, and the universe.

On account of all these researches, I also dislike the way of some religions and systems to name love as their goal. It’s easy to throw in a big word commonly experienced as positive, and use it to make yourself a “good person™”. Due to this I also haven’t adopted love as an individual emotion into a main role in the Chrysalis system of thought. There is certainly love in Naos tis Chrysallis, and I can guarantee my own love to every Chrysalid. But in Chrysalis itself, satisfaction and building one’s own life play higher roles than love. If a person is unwell, love might be too big a thing to handle. If the mind is especially fractured, there’s a greater risk of going blind from rose-colored glasses. In such a case, one’s way of experiencing and processing love turns unpredictable and, for the other person, frightening. Even dangerous.

Encouraging emotionality doesn’t mean emotions as such would justify anything. A feeling of love doesn’t mean the object of your emotion owes you anything. Anger and aggression don’t mean you have to walk to a fish and chips stall and beat people up. Also, unnecessary “I am so very offended” tantrums have no space within the Temple, unless the one having the tantrum is ready to take responsibility for his own emotions and break them down analytically. Remember: in your reality someone may have said badly, but in the reality of the ill-speaker, the words might have had a completely different meaning than what you read into them. Envy, above all, is an emotion I want to subject to particular scrutiny in the Temple. Because it is the nature of the whole system to aim for glory and achievements, it is to be expected that pretty awesome and luminous peeps are going to assemble within the Temple. So, by all means, be envious if it somehow benefits your Chrysalis and doesn’t cause harm to anyone else. Bud gods help you if you poison and harm the Temple with your inability to handle your envy. In that event the Kyrios of the Temple may have a little chat with you.

Emotions are allowed, encouraged, and esteemed. By regulating the reactions caused by them we ensure that the gift of emotion is not nullified. If you throw a martyr tantrum because someone has decorated a cake with nonpareils of the wrong color, quite a lot of shaping the realities of others is required to allow your emotion to be seen as valid. Especially if you could just as well choose to raise your hand and pour the nonpareils of your preference. Individualism is not synonymous with being an ass—and not a justification for playing the victim.

So throw yourself into your emotions, and be sensible with it all the while. This combination will yield the best results on your journey of transformation.

The Meaning of Change in Chrysalis

Chrysalis

The word Chrysalis is derived from the Greek word χρυσαλλίς meaning chrysallís (plural: chrysalides). It stands for the stage of the transformation of a butterfly, where the butterfly develops inside its pupa. In Naos tis Chrysallis the “Chrysalis” stands for the entire occult philosophical system, the great transformation process, including all of its stages.

When we think about butterflies, we often contemplate the symbolism of fragility and gentleness. However, when you closely inspect the chrysalis (the stage in the development of a butterfly where the change from a caterpillar into a fully grown butterfly) you can see that we’re dealing with something much more dreary. Yet, even in its abysmal gruesomeness, it’s something magical and truly symbolical.

Although the Chrysalis refers to the pupa stage of the butterfly, the stage is anything but static. Regardless that to the outside world the cocoon seems to remain still and almost lifeless, a significant transformation is taking place. During this stage the caterpillar performs one of it’s most complicated acts, finalizing its metamorphosis. After which an adult butterfly is ready to emerge into the world.

During the chrysalis the caterpillar, well, for all intents and purposes almost completely liquifies. Only the most critical portions of the caterpillar remain, for example, some of the nerve tissue remains, but does go through a re-wiring. There is no in-between form for the caterpillar and the butterfly. There won’t be a slow gradual development from child to adult, as we’ve come to expect from mammals. No slight changes in physique or appearance. The feet of the caterpillar do not grow into the legs of the adult butterfly, the wing’s do not simply sprout from it’s back.

For the caterpillar to hatch as the butterfly we’ve come to expect when thinking about one, the caterpillar has to cease to exist. The caterpillar dies to be born again. It is as close to a real-life phoenix as we can get.

This is the foundation of Chrysalis. To be reborn, you have to leave the past behind, the circumstances and things that have lead you to your current state, created the present you. The type of you, that you aren’t necessarily happy with. Of course, it’s not a requirement for being a Chrysalid, you can also be happy with what you got already.

The wings of the butterfly wouldn’t be strong enough to carry the body of the caterpillar. In the same manner, a person cannot carry all their impairments with them through their own transformation. You simply won’t be strong enough to carry all your impairments with you. They’ll only hinder your journey.

Change can be painful and it’ll require effort. The more shattered you are, the more pieces you have to gather and patch them together. If you carry all the impairments with you, you have to also carry all the consequences of these impairments. The wings of the butterfly wouldn’t be strong enough to carry the body of the caterpillar. In the same manner, a person cannot carry all their impairments with them through their own transformation. You simply won’t be strong enough to carry all your impairments with you. They’ll only hinder your journey.

Because an integral part of Chrysalis is having to learn how to discard it is an important and magnificent process, even in all its beautiful hollowness, oppressiveness and weariness. It is the opposite of hiding under covers in a fetal position, waiting for someone to come along and fix all the things for you. It is a series of tough, ironclad decisions. Changes in the way you discuss things in your head, what words you use, what significance you assign to them. Chrysalis can be a total dissection of your identity, the slaughter of your own character, changing your name, along with everything else. Radical change requires radical actions. There can be no rebirth without death.

I have gone through multiple bigger moments of chrysalis in my life. The most significant of those was a process that took years. A process, during which, I left my relationship, my hobbies, my hometown, changed my appearance and changed careers. When listed like this, these things can sound very mundane and easy things to alter, trust me they were everything but that. For example, I did not only leave a monogamous relationship, I entirely questioned my role in a romantic and sexual light. I shrugged off the expectations and taboos and began to live a life that would satisfy my sexual needs and fully match my drive.

I had to kill a lot, figuratively. In a sense, I feel like what I used to be had died. If not all of it, at least parts of it. Those were the parts that would have eventually lead me to my early demise in the physical world. This stage, in which I got rid of these parts, caused severe depression and a total breakdown. During this stage, I also discovered the origins of the Temple of Chrysalis.

The hardest part was to destroy the ingrained thought processes and to recognize, that I would never be able to satisfy everyone. For me, the most important tools to break the ingrained thought process for myself were the healthy dose of selfishness and learning how to look at the world through a more solipsism lens. Those were the tools I was able to destroy the walls of my cocoon and break free.

Chrysalis doesn’t mean the change is going to be pleasant. It can be a struggle that takes years. It won’t be for everyone. For some, it’ll be easier just to remain as they are. Remain in that violent relationship, remain in that boring horrible job, remain in your bed. If you’ve chosen to do so for decades, the journey might be a bit longer for you.

And even after the transformation is complete, the new life doesn’t just suddenly happen. A butterfly, once emerged from its cocoon, is exhausted. It’s still soaked in the remnants of its past form, it won’t be able to fly immediately. In this fashion, we can’t expect to just walk into the life we want to live instantly after our transformation, it’s not going to be handed to us on a silver platter. After the transformation, you must nurture yourself and the things that bring you closer to what you want to be. At this moment, you can feel the kaleidoscope of Lamproptera showing up in pleasurable experiences, whispering to you from that glass of champagne you’ve chosen to have in the celebration of what truly matters – you. It teaches your system the lessons that you need so that the previous misery would never enter your life again.

Then, when we have finally dried our wings from the body fluids of our former life, we can spread them to their full glory and flash their magnificence to the world. In the way we want. And then, we may begin our journey toward making ourselves eternal.

Thus the one who encounters a large, colorful butterfly in his life, captures the memory on its retina. Hence one encounter after another brings one closer to the books of the world.
